Leonardo DiCaprio in Incpetion

Ok, Christopher Nolan. You’re a fine director, I really loved Memento, Insomnia was ace, Batman Begins might be my favourite ‘Superhero’ (is Batman actually ‘Super’?) movie, but then The Prestige was a bit pants (the ending was very ‘meh’) and then The Dark Knight might be the most bizarrely overrated film of the naughties. So, in my eyes at least, you’ve been letting yourself down of late.

Enter Inception, Mr. Nolan’s next film, once a production shrouded in mystery and shadows (I prefer my films like this) with a doom-filled dirge of a soundtrack over highly stylised visuals of men in suits eerily floating down corridors, glasses of water exasperatingly empting themselves, and lower half of Manhattan(?) folding over onto itself – it made no sense, and that’s quite exciting to me.

Following conventional studio wisdom, the final trailer to be released before the full film simply HAS to give you the plot, or at least let you understand who the characters are (it stars Leonardo DiCaprio, by the way) so here goes. Mr. DiCaprio is a man who has lost his wife? Wants her back? (yawn) but is also a kind of secret agent type who steals things from people’s dreams (ooh!) so, there we go. It’s got Joseph Gordon-Levitt in it too, which is always a good move.

It does really look ace, doesn’t it? And I didn’t really like The Dark Knight that much either. Not a patch on Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

So young Fairbanks – have you seen and reviewed said film? Me and Jeanette saw it on Friday and thought it was very good – so good in fact that I have a strange wanting to grow my hair, slick it back and get an impossibly sharp suit, shirt and tie combo rocking!

Well hello, Mr. Neil.

I haven’t seen it yet, no! I’ve been waiting for ages for it to come out but I said I’d see it with my mate and he’s been busy all weekend. We’re currently in the process of discussing whether we watch it in IMAX or not…

Did you? I remember watching The Dark Knight in IMAX and only a few scenes were actually full screen.

Did you see this? Very cool.

We didn’t IMAX it up – just your run of the mill cinema. I’m sure some scenes will look amazing in IMAX but like you said TDK only had a few – admittedly ace – IMAXed scenes and I imagine this will be the same with Inception.

Maybe IMAX is a 2nd viewing option so as not to get in the way of finding your way round the multiple levels of narrative.

Have you heard that Mr Nolan is ‘godfathering’ the reboot of the Superman franchise? He has already said that it won’t be a case of simply transferring Supes into Batman world and that there will be no Marvelesque crossovers.

I quite liked Routh as Clark Kent/Superman and it would be nice to see him retain the role in something more than substantial than Singer’s homage to the original.

He’s directing the new Superman? Or just overseeing it? Either way, my faith in him has been restored as I watched Inception last night @ the IMAX (it was full screen all film!) and it blew my face off. Really, really impressed with it. One of the most visually amazing films I’ve seen. Who needs 3D eh?

I quite liked Routh too… shame he hasn’t been in much since then. He’s in the Scott Pilrgrim film though, I’m currently reading through the (ace) graphic novels. Looking forward to that coming out..
