Quote of the moment:

Hero of 2006:

George Clooney George Clooney - eatmycheeseplease.co.uk's Hero of 2006

When Gorgeous George finally gets both the critical and commercial success he deserves, what does he do? Smile a lot like Tom Cruise? No. He uses his A-List status and intelligence to turn around and kicks his government in the ass, both personally and on-screen, winning an Oscar for Syriana and gets a nominated for Best Director for Good Night, And Good Luck. George Clooney… The Cheese salutes you.

Strange Fact:
In March 2007, Denzel Washington is expected to make a full public apology for being one of the most irritating actors in the world. The penitent actor is also expected to undertake over 3000 hours community service for his crimes frequent crimes against audiences.

Eatmycheeseplease.co.uk Awards 2006

Remember 2006? No? Well it was about 365 says long and had some pretty good films and music and all that. As such, it's the first annual EATMYCHEESEPLEASE.CO.UK AWARDS (Yay!)

And, despite being superior to everyone in almost every way, The Cheese is in no way elitist. And so The Cheese Awards puts all the bestest in one big pile, so you, the little people, can decide who’s the pick of the bunch.
For your consideration:
Best Drama:
Munich
Steven Spielberg’s weighty, topical AND masterful retelling of the 1973 Munich Olympic assassinations is so good, it sets your teeth on fire. Almost.
The Departed
Martin ‘I never win Oscars’ Scorsese’s first-rate recreation of Wai Keung Lau’s excellent Infernal Affairs, returning to his crime roots and coaxing some of the best performances for this glitzy all-star cast.
United 93
Paul Greengrass took a bold step in this dramatisation of the crash of United 93 on September 11th 2001. The result was almost too powerful. Excellent in every way.

Best Action / Adventure:

Casino Royale
There was a lot riding on Bond 21. A new star, a new style, and a new direction. Luckily, it’s the best Bond film since the 60s and Daniel Craig’s six pack (and talent) made him a bona fide superstar.

Superman Returns
Bryan Singer’s overhaul of the world’s most iconic… er icon, was most certainly a solid, entertaining affair, if a little underwhelming. New Superman Brandon Routh proved himself more than worthy to don the blue tights.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dean Man’s Chest
Inevitably one of the biggest box office hits of the year, everyone expected Cap’n Jack to deliver the thrills and ‘gills, but few expected such an wonderfully overblown adventure epic of Apocalypse Now proportions.

Best Thriller:
Children of Men
Clive Owen further proved his leading man sensibilities in 2006, and non more so than with Alfonso Cuarón’s dystopia Children of Men.
Inside Man
There are few genres more formulaic than the heist drama, but Spike Lee, along with his boys Denzel Washington and Clive Owen, proves that he can do mainstream cinema better than most.
The Prestige
Despite not getting the attention it deserves, The Prestige director and wunderkind Christopher Nolan put two of the world’s leading men Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman) face-to-face this ‘magical’ thriller. Gettit? Erg.
Hard Candy
One of the most gripping and unsettling films of the year, if you have balls or not. The film works because of the power of its actors; namely Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson.

Best Comedy:

Borat
Sacha Baron Cohen proved he has balls (and a penis) bigger than anyone in the comedy world, single handily making a nation of millions look foolish and still having everyone queuing up to show him some love.

Jackass Number 2
Johnny Knoxville and his compadres return for more inane fun, this time pushing the barriers of taste and decency further and further and further, it’s about 5 times funnier than the original.

Best Indie:
Brick
First time writer / director Rian Johnson decided to revivify The Maltese Falcon and place it in a Californian high school. Odd concept, but an astonishing result with another excellent performance from Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Little Miss Sunshine
Steve Carrell has gone from strength to strength since his first lead role in the excellent 40 Year Old Virgin, but non more so in this understated and brilliant comedy / drama.

Capote
Philip Semour Hoffman kicks more ass than most, and it was good to see him win the Best Actor Oscar for his depiction of Droopy voiced author Truman Capote.

Stranger Than Fiction
Will Farrell, along side Steve Carrel, have been the success stories of the past few years. Acting-wise, this is his greatest achievement, managing to be both funny and heartbreaking in one of the most uplifting films you’ll see (about death).

Best Foreign Film:
Pan’s Labyrinth
When not writing or directing films about Superheroes, Guillermo del Toro makes subtle, enigmatic Spanish-language films, but this brutally dark fairytale masterpiece surpasses anything he’s achieved thus far.

Volver
Penélope Cruz received praise up the yin-yang (figuratively speaking) for her performance in this Pedro Almodóvar drama about making things right after you croak.

Best TV:

LOST Season 2 & 3
Although there are those (losers) who got all confused after the first few episodes, the cooler folks stuck around and basked in this mysterious, compelling, intelligent, and oddly addictive drama.

The Sopranos SeASON 6
The decision to split season 6 into two parts (look out the final Sopranos episodes in 2007) meant that the 2006 section perhaps lacked a little compared to its predecessors, but it still kicks the crap out of any other TV show like, ever.
SPECIAL MENTION: Carnivàle
Although it technically ended in 2005, the 2nd (and seemingly last) season come out in 2006. HBO's Carnivale is one of the most wonderful pieces of popular entertainment you'll see. Spooky, challenging and sorely missed.

Best Albums:

Keane | Under The Iron Sea
They may be mummy’s boys to some, but with Under The Iron Sea, Keane pulled a Kid A. Dark, brooding and frequently inspired.

Arctic Monkeys | Whatever People Say I am, That is What I’m Not
The cynics may have bitched about their meteoric rise to Multi-Platinum, er… Town, that doesn’t stop them from being the best indie band to emerge in years.

Thom Yorke | The Eraser
What does Mr Yorke do when not with his Radiohead buddies? He makes Goth-Disco records. Kinda. Easily one the finest albums of 2006.

DJ Shadow | The Outsider
You have to admire Josh Davies’ balls. They’re lovely. It’s a testament to his supreme talent that, with The Outsider, he’s produced one of the most wide-ranging and diverse albums from a mainstream artist ever, and still have everyone kiss his ass.

Hot Chip | The Warning
Hot Chip appeal to the head as much as the ass. The Warning  brought their thinking-man’s electro funky-ness to the masses and made Timmy Mallett’s clothing look cool.

Secret Machines | 10 Silver Drops
This sophomore effort from Texan stoners help back the thunderous drums that drove their debut and shifted more for melody, an excellent album from one of the best bands around.

Joanna Newson | Ys
When God made Joanna, they threw in the exuberance of a child, the croak of a witch and the dress-sense of a Samaritan. With his, (and her debut) album, she proved there’s more to her that simple kookiness. Always beautiful and beguiling.

Most Disappointing:

Miami Vice
Some people will have you believe this is a daring, suggestive film from HEAT genius Michael Mann. They’re wrong. It’s like filtering an action film through Dogme 95. Simply doesn’t work.

X-Men 3
Although not as bad as people will tell you, X-Men 3 soon lost the integrity of its predecessors and settled for, er… Vinnie ‘Fucking’ Jones in a gimp suit.

Have I missed anything so amazing that I should be stabbed? Let me know.
